Question 1- In what ways does your media product use, develop or challenge forms and conventions of real media products?

Question 1. by Michael Freeman

Question 2- How effective is the combination of your Main Project and Ancillary Task?
The combination of my ancillary task and my main project was extremely effective as it enabled me to further develop my skills through out the A2 course along with my depth of knowledge in terms of the production, planning and the theory aspects. The continuity is a very vital aspect when making the production successful. For my Ancillary task I had to create a title sequence for my main production along with a 30 second radio advert, advertising my main production.

Within existing media productions they tend to include a level of consistency through out the whole product which contributes to a set of codes and conventions which includes the house style, professional atmosphere like a formal tone and then the structure of the product. I have ensured that these three main aspects are implemented within my work with both tasks. Both the title sequence and advert has the same music through out all three parts; Radio advert, Title sequence and Main task so it would be a familiar sound for the listeners/viewers. It creates a brand identity for the company and production. Through the radio advert, the headlines for the reports are the same for the main task production, the heavy emphasis about bullying and how to help and the effects of the act. Then through to the Brit awards and the winners then the weather report. I have carried over the colour scheme making a house style through both my main task and my title sequence.
My house colours were red and blue as they are the most professional colours and tend to be associated to be trustworthy. The tone through out all tasks are exactly the same, it is a professional tone but making it light-hearted at times when necessary for example, when the hard news story is being reported the tone is a lot more serious compared to the Brit award story and with the title sequence to music and pace of images being presented create the same tone and atmosphere. Finally, our news logo is visible throughout the news program keeping the continuity and reminding the viewers who and what they are watching.

Question 3 - What have you learnt from audience feedback?

Audience theory is another vital part to making a news program. The analysis aids the development and creation of the product. I used Ofcom which obtains audience theory already so from this I knew there was a big gap in the market for a news program for younger people aged from 16-24 and those who use social media which tends to be that age group anyway. 98% of people collect the content from news using TV but I figured that was because there is not really a news program on social media platforms and with the huge presence of people on these sites and online in general it would make my product a success.

I also obtained audience feedback myself while using questionnaires. this helped me to establish what to include in our news program as it told us our target audiences requirements and interests, so if we put them topics within the product it would make it more focused towards them and more successful. It also aided us with what demographics and psychographics to choose.
Vox pops were another technique I used to gain feedback from my audience this gives the same feedback as the questionnaires as it shows me the interests and preferences they have but it allows us to get to know our audience on a personal level as we physically talk to them in a casual manner.
I also received feedback through my teachers and peers which helped us with the amendments and changes we needed to make in order to make our program more effective and successful.
The theory provided me with feedback too as the uses and gratifications audience theory proposed by Blumer and Katz enabled me to understand how audiences work to an extent.
